Care & Corona: What we could learn from this for a caring society

18 October 2021, 7 pm

Assoz. Prof. Mag.rer.soc.oec. Dr.phil. Klaus Jürgen Wegleitner
Institut for Pastoral Theology and Pastoral Psychology and Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Aging and Care (CIRAC), University of Graz

Lecture: Care is at the center of life - but in many cases still on the fringes of society. Due to the Corona crisis, attention has increased. The existing structural fragility of the social and health systems and the radical injustice in the distribution and recognition of care work have become abundantly apparent. The temporary “insight” and the cheering on the balcony that the care professions are truly “system-preserving” and represent truly humanly important activities seems to be slowly ebbing away again. That mustn't happen! We are close to missing out on a major social and political learning opportunity. Let us imagine a society in which care work and culture not only form the silent backbone of society, but also shape society in a new way.

Bio: Klaus Wegleitner is a sociologist and care researcher, holds a habilitation in the subject of Public Health and End-of Life Care. He researches and teaches as an Associate Professor in the Public Care Department at the Institute for Pastoral Theology and Psychology, and - as Deputy Head - at Center for Interdisciplinary Aging and Care Research (CIRAC). It is dedicated to questions of social development and transformation needs of health systems, solidarity and worry networks in old age and at the end of life. The topics of social justice, the democratization of care, as well as the multi-layered design of our future living, living and care spaces shape his international research and publication activities. He is chairman of the association worry network for the promotion of social care culture.

Location: AULA of the University of Graz and live broadcast to the following regional branch offices: STMK: Feldbach, Federal School Center | Knittelfeld, City Library | Neumarkt, market town hall | Voitsberg, City Halls | Maria Lankowitz, JUFA; Lower Austria: Maissau, Maissau educational area; Upper Austria: Braunau, Techno-Z
