the next issue of the ausreißer focusses on "caring perspectives."
What does it mean to "care?" Care does not only refer to nursing care such as 24-hour-care work or caring for relatives, but also includes self-care, interpersonal relationships as well as neighbourly help. Care work is often unpaid and precarious but affects all stages of life. It begins with caring parents looking after their child and stretches from (professional) child care to caring relationships between colleagues at work or friends to volunteer care work such as visits in nursing homes or hospitals and being there for people during their last phase of life, for example in a hospice.
Joan Tronto (2009), Professor of Political Science at the University of Minnesota, claims that all human beings receive, give and need care in various ways. The interpersonal dependence on care relationships is rather complex and constitutes a unique part of being human. Further, it enables us to take on challenges and care for ourselves as well as for each other.
The editorial's focus “caring perspectives“ emphasizes different aspects of care work, which is often invisible, and places a strong focus on various perspectives on receiving and giving care in professional as well as private settings.
What does it mean to care for oneself and for others? How do care workers experience interpersonal relationships with the people they care for? Which challenges do they encounter in their everyday life and which positive experiences to they cherish?
