Theater Play God with Keynote and Discussion

 ©CIRAC

The keynote and discussion with Dr. Johann Platzer, which followed the performance of the play "Gott" (by Ferdinand von Schirach) at the Schauspielhaus Graz, attracted great interest

After the play, which raised essential questions on the subject of assisted suicide, there followed a keynote lecture by Mag. Dr. Johann Platzer (Institute for Moral Theology, University of Graz) on the subject of "Assisted Suicide - Shaping Opinion or Guiding Opinion?" at the Schauspielhaus. The lecture offered a brief overview of the legal and ethical argumentation on this controversial topic and it was put up for discussion to what extent plays or films, in which the audience can vote on sensitive fundamental legal issues, can or should steer the social debate. The follow-up discussion was moderated by Timo Staaks.

An open discussion with Johann Platzer, Susanne Konstanze Weber (Chair of the Ethics Committee) and Fredrick Jan Hoffmann (Medical Expert) took place afterwards. Students, researchers and other interested visitors had a lively discussion about sympathy steering, the production process of the play, and the role of self-determination.

The event was a cooperation between the Age and Care Research Group Graz and the Schauspielhaus Graz.
