Social images of old age are often negative and deficit-oriented: getting old is often equated with physical and mental decline and associated with catastrophe scenarios such as the "silver tsunami." Negative images of age limit our ability to imagine a good age for ourselves and others. But is "active" and "successful" aging an alternative? Does age mean maturity or burden? The lecture is devoted to the analysis of social images of old age and invites reflection and discussion.
